Safety Officer

 

Summary
Develop, administer, and enforce regulations and standards concerning aviation safety, including (1) the airworthiness of aircraft and aircraft systems, (2) the competence of pilots, mechanics, and other personnel, and (3) safety aspects of aviation facilities, equipment and procedures. The position requires knowledge and skill in the operation or maintenance of aircraft and aircraft systems.

The incumbent will apply knowledge and skills acquired as an airman (pilot, navigator, flight instructor, etc.) to develop and administer the regulations and safety standards pertaining to the operation of aircraft.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements a safety program that covers the full range of aviation safety including flight and ground operations.
  • Plans and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
  • Plans and implements programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices, fire prevention, and correct handling techniques for chemicals, toxins, equipment, and other materials.
  • Prepares, studies and provides analysis of industrial accident causes and hazards as it applies to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies.
  • Inspects organization facilities to detect existing or potential safety and health hazards. Upon discovery of such hazards, the safety manager will make recommendations for corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure compliance with implemented policy/procedures.
  • Provides information, signs, posters, barriers, and other materials to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and works to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions.
  • Leads the investigation of incidents, accidents and/or injuries. Cooperates with authorities in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
  • Authors (when appropriate), compiles and submits accident reports required by internal company policy as well as regulatory agencies when required.
  • Oversees the administration of workers compensation program, including working with the insurance carrier to reduce employee lost time.
  • Prepares and arranges safety exhibits and material for display, promotional work, industry conferences, and exhibitions.
  • Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs.
  • Maintains safety files and records.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Must have held a Flight Instructor, Commerical Pilot or Airline Transport Pilot Certificate.

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree from accredited university and a minimum of 7 years of leadership/management experience in an organization dedicated to aviation or equivalent combination of education/experience. Experience in safety programs, policies and/or investigations (both ground and air).


Language Skills
Demonstrates exceptional verbal and written communication skills, creates accurate and detailed reports, shares information and ideas with others, listens and gets clarification; able to speak fluent English.


Reasoning Ability
Uses logic and reasoning to identify and analyze alternate solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems and tasks.


Computer Skills
Knowledgeable in using the following:

  • MS Office Suite (intermediate level)

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is:

  • Regularly exposed to the extremes in heat, cold and inclement weather. High winds, dirt, and dust are common in the work place.
  • Performing work in hangar areas, outdoors, on parked aircraft and sometimes in hazardous noise areas.
  • Must often work in confined spaces and in awkward positions.
  • May be exposed to oil, hydraulic fluid, solvents and hazardous fluids and gases, to include, but not limited to Halon. Grease and aircraft fluids are common in the work place.
  • Outdoor environment can be rugged where cuts, bruises, muscle strain and injury from falls are possible.
  • At times, the employee will be exposed to actuating flight control surfaces and rotating propellers from which they must remain clear to avoid serious injury.
